This is a video of the opening of an exhibit for the 2009 UHR Double Eagle gold coin at the US Mint's facility in Philadelphia on February 3, 2009. Featured speakers for this portion include the Philadelphia Plant Manager Marc Landry and United States Mint Director Edmund C. Moy.
"Today, we are proud to unveil an exhibit which tells the story of the creation of one of the most beautiful coins ever struck by the United States Mint, the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold coin," says Landry upon starting the ceremony.
The Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold coin was originally designed by Augustus St. Gaudens in the early 1900's. Unfortunately, the minting technology of the day combined with the inability to use the coin in commerce required an almost immediate change to the design. Utilizing new technology, the Mint is once again able to recreate a version of the coin for today's collectors.
"Our new exhibit tells the story about how the United States Mint made a coin that embodies the spirit of one of the most beautiful coin designs ever rendered," Mint Director Moy stated in his remarks. "President (Theodore) Roosevelt, at the time chose the American Sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens to design a new gold piece. Roosevelt wanted coins that told the story of America's coming of age, and that were also artistically excellent and reflected our identity as a nation of liberty and democracy."
More history is relayed about the Double Eagle and what it took to bring it into the 21st century. (See part 2.)
The video was recorded by the Atlantic County Numismatic Society (ACNS) http://www.accoins.org/.
