This is a video featuring US Mint Director Ed Moy at a ceremony launching the use of $1 coins by the Washington Metro Transit System. It took place in December 2008 and also contains a few words from Metro's Chief Financial Officer Carol Kissal.

"We're here to tell you about a new collaboration..." starts Mint Director Moy at the beginning of the ceremony, "that places millions of one dollar coins into the Metro Farecard vending machines."

The District of Columbia's Metro consists of the second largest subway network and the fifth largest bus system in the United States. As such, it is an ideal place to make the dollar coins available to the general public in their everyday activities.

"One dollar coins....last for decades," Moy says extolling the virtues of the coins over dollar bills. "They last for 30 to 40 years, and when they wear out, they're 100% recyclable."

Carol Kissal then takes a turn at speaking and explains that before the change, all of the machines only dispensed quarters and nickels. Now the dollar coins will be used as well.

Both Kissal and Moy take a few moments to show the vending machines in action.

Here we have an old commercial from the US Mint touting the "New Golden Dollar."

The Sacagawea Golden Dollar Coin premiered in the year 2000 to poor demand. The government intended the coin to replace dollar bills, which would save the country millions as the coin would last significantly longer than a paper dollar bill would.

In an effort to promote their use, the US Mint had commercials like these made. In this commercial, the face of George Washington (taken from a dollar bill) is super-imposed on the body of a person.

"OK, so I am not on the new Golden Dollar Coin. That's cool with me!" states the Washington figure. The commercial continues with "Washington" doing things a normal person would do in their daily lives like eating Chinese food, dancing, scuba diving, bike riding, etc. It also shows him using the dollar coin to pay for things, closing with "Its So Money."

Take a few moments to watch this vintage commercial, you may recall it.

In an effort to promote the use of $1 coins instead of dollar bills, the US Mint had this television commercial created featuring the Statue of Liberty. It is a short 30 second piece that starts off with an image of Ellis Island without the famous icon. Someone is heard stating "She's gone, She's Just Not There!"

As glimpses of Liberty are seen walking through the streets of New York, a voice-over states:

"They last for decades, are 100% recyclable and using them now could save our country billions of dollars."

Finally, the Statue of Liberty stops in front of a hot dog vendor and hands down a couple of golden dollars to which the voice-over continues:

"The $1 coins... You'll want to get out and do your part too! The $1 coin, it's real change."

The new incarnation of dollar coins was started in 2000 with the introduction of the Sacagawea Dollar. Its obverse featured an image of the legendary Native American who helped guide Lewis and Clark on their journey. The reverse contained an image of an eagle until 2009 when the Native American $1 Coin Act dictated changing designs to commemorate the important part American Indians have played in the development of the United States.

A Presidential $1 coin program augmented the Sacagawea dollars beginning in 2007. These coins honor the former Presidents of the United States in the order in which they served. Four coins are to be issued each year until the program is completed. However, in order to be immortalized on these coins, the former leader must have been deceased for at least two years.

All of these coins are sometimes referred to as 'Golden Dollars', although no gold is contained in them, they are just colored that way.

Unfortunately, most Americans have not accepted the use of dollar coins for everyday transactions and still prefer to use the dollar bill. This is something the government would like to change which explains the commercial.
