Here is a video showing an example of how coins were struck in the 18th and 19th centuries. It involves placing a blank in a screw press.

This looks like quite a labor intensive process, but in reality as long as the blanks were ready, many coins could be created in just a few minutes. It did involve quite a bit of trust, however, as the person placing the blank in the press was not usually the same person who operated the device. It makes you wonder how many fingers got smashed in the process over the years.

This particular demonstration was filmed at the ANA money show, March 15th, 2009.
